  Nick,

   Well, the updates are going to be in .rpm format so they won't need to
be untarred, they need to be installed with this command:

       rpm -Uhv whatever.rpm

   But as for tarballs, they usually untar themselves into a directory of
their own, then you can just move the directory to wherever. What I
usually do is untar/ungzip the file and then check out the README or
INSTALL file that comes in the tarball.
