The Origins of Everything

From SusoSight

You know, if religious people didn't waste their brain power on religion and put it towards something else like inventing things. We'd probably all be gods now with our own universes to run. In some ways, that has already happened.

A prelude

For the most part, I have given up on trying to debate religion and whether it is valid. I had my own involvement in religion for a while and it was ended when I started thinking to myself on long 6 hour car rides home from college. What I realized is that people want God to exist. And its easy to believe in it. I mean, how else could you explain the beauty of trees, the sky and how the universe has a kind of "design" to it. I mean, how could that happen naturally. Someone must have created it. At least, that's what I figured were the thoughts that began religion so long ago.

Religion served a purpose in a world without tools and techniques to question the world around us. It seems that it was centuries or millenniums before people like Democritus or Archimedes would come along and use rational thought separate from emotion to try to explain simple things like what stuff is made of or why water is displaced.

So no wonder religion is out of control in our world. How can it be acceptable for 95% of the population to be delusional. Religions static place in our society can be compared to an industry, where the initial businesses ascend to institutional status and are very hard if not impossible to compete with or dislodge from their position.

From Questions, Knowledge

The question basically is "What is the nature and structure of the universe?"

All I know now is that determining the true origins of the universe is beyond us. A theory can have enough observable evidence to help it gain a reputation for being right. But it can never be proven without actually being there at the creation of it all.

Instead of trying to determine what happened then, let's explore what could have potentially created everything. Not in order to prove what happened but just to explore the possibilities and aspects of each of them.

The Envelope Please

Here are the possibilities I can think of for how everything came to be. Some of them will sound strange, but its important here to be complete. First I will list all of them and then in another section go through each one.

  • God, an omnipotent being who has always existed, created everything.
  • We are already in the afterlife such as the christian heaven or hell.
  • We exist, but we are reliving our life or someone else's life while in heaven or hell.
  • Matter has always existed and follows the observable laws of physics
  • Matter was created during a "big bang" and follows the observable laws of physics.
  • The universe or our perception of it is simulated in a computer
  • We don't actually exist, this is a dream or a thought
  • Our universe is actually part of something bigger and our atoms are small universes.
