Double standard

Lately there has been a lot of anti-smoking advertising on TV, billboards, newspapers and other media. It seems to be brought about by government agencies that want to tell people the truth about the harmful effects of smoking (Now I understand that this is just one government agency and does not represent the whole government). But if the government knows that smoking is a bad thing and wants to stop it, why doesn't it just go ahead. I mean are the big 7 (tobacco companies) really that powerful as to prevent it? And if they are, what does that say about our government. Maybe it is really a country run by the corporations and not by politicians.
Some people would cut in at this point and say "what about our freedoms and rights to run a business?". Well, I think that there is a point at which rights and freedoms should be outweighed by common sense. I imagine that the only people who would vote against the abolishment of smoking are the ones that smoke. This should be a tall tale sign that it's time to be kicked.
