I just returned last Thursday from a 3 week trip to Uzbekistan to visit my wife's family and see the area. That's one reason I haven't been updating this thoughts page.
A lot of times when I look around the U.S. I see a great deal of things that could be improved, the way people drive, the condition of buildings, business policies, etc. Some people have tried to convince me that things are pretty good here by saying that the rest of the world has a rough time. They told me that the U.S. is the best country in the world. Some of them told me that without actually having been to another country.
So as you can imagine, my trip to Uzbekistan was an eye-opener. It is not a 3rd world country, but it's kinda close. There is a lot of corruption, bribery, poor road conditions, unmaintained buildings, lack of laws to protect people, too many police and a different attitude in general. So I finally saw for myself that the U.S. is a great country. At least better than Uzbekistan.
When I complain about problems in the U.S. though, I am not doing it because I don't know how well off I am, I complain and try to improve things because *everything* and *anything* can be improved. It's the human way. Strive for a better society to live in. There is nothing wrong with that. I want things to work better, that's why I complain about the way they are.
On the flip side, I never knew how well constructed and maintained our roads and buildings are until I visited Uzbekistan. I think I will write a thank you letter to the Department of Transportation.
I'll be releasing pictures, video and a story of my travels in a couple of weeks on my website.
